The Lights are Going out in Sligo
If Sligo County Council does not get more dosh before the end of the year, it could a case of ‘lights out. Turning off the public lighting would be one of the options that the council would have to consider, while the water supply would also be under threat.
Councillors met last Friday to discuss the very serious cash crisis that the council is facing.
They decided to ask Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan for an emergency bailout of €10m. This request is a total joke, as they well know the Minister will them to get lost. This is just a shoddy attempt by a local council to divert attention from their own incompetence and inability to manage and control their level of debt.
The council has capital debt of around €73m and an ever-growing revenue deficit, which now stands at nearly €13m. This year alone the difference between what the council will spend and take in will be just short of €2.5m.
This is bad news for the citizens of Sligo no water, no light at the end of tunnel. However, there again I suspect most the councils are in the same boat.
