    Not fat cats like the one depicted here.

    Government’s not the problem, it’s the degree to which the power of wealthy individuals and corporations have corrupted the system that is the problem.

    • I would think both Government and Corporations are both guilty.The system allows lobbying which to my mind quite often cohabits with bribery and corruption

      • Lobbying should be allowed for individuals with concerns. The public needs to be able to access it’s government. It’s the campaign finance system that’s a mess. It should all be public and an even playing field at that. Further, corporations should be severely limited in purchasing media for political influence. The fact that a corporation is treated as a person in this regard just begs for abuse.

      • Agreed. Are donations made public in the US? Campaign Budgets.In Ireland it is all supposed to be above board… Public Office Commission is an independent body established in December 2001 by the Standards in Public Office Act 2001. It has six members and is chaired by a former Judge of the High Court. It has supervisory roles under three separate pieces of legislation. Its functions include supervising the disclosure of interests and compliance with tax clearance requirements, the disclosure of donations and election expenditure and the expenditure of state funding received by political parties.

      • Individual donations are made public. The problem comes with a loop hole provided by the US Supreme Court in the Citizen’s United case that allowed for the formation of non-public Super PACs. These entities played a major part in the 2012 Presidential election and have greatly monetized politics in the US. The only result I can see from this is US politicians becoming ever- more beholden to monied special interests.

      • Sounds crazy to me. I assume somewhat cynically both parties support the loophole.

      • Actually, there is a huge movement among the liberals to remove them, which conservatives oppose, but not so publicly. Citizen’s United is generally disliked here in the US.
