IMMIGRANT WORKERS in Ireland are faced with racism everyday, new report has revealed.
Taking Racism Seriously: Migrants’ Experiences of Violence, Harassment and Anti-Social Behaviour in the Dublin Area, which is based on accounts given to the Immigrant Council of Ireland (ICI), shows that an overwhelming number of those interviewed said they had encountered racism during their working time, some of which was on a daily basis.
Speaking at the launch of the report, Chief Executive of the ICI, Denise Charlton, said the findings indicated that society needs to be braver in challenging racism.
“This report illustrates very starkly the price being paid for our lack of consistent, effective and strong action against racism.
“We cannot continue to tolerate circumstances where people working on public transport are subjected to racist abuse on a daily basis and regularly subject to racially motivated assaults,” she said.
Respondents included an African bus-drivers, Luas revenue protection officers from a variety of ethnic backgrounds and Asian healthcare workers, all of whom had lived in Ireland for between six and 10 years.
